Will the Nintendo Switch 2 be able to play Nintendo Switch games?
Yes!
We don’t know a lot about the successor to the Nintendo Switch — we don’t even know for certain that it’ll be called the “Switch 2”, but that name will have to do for now.
Some things we do know for certain, based on what Nintendo has said:
- Nintendo IS making a Switch successor. They confirmed this in a tweet in May of 2024.
- While details about the Switch successor are still very sparse, Nintendo has said it will “make an announcement” about it by the end of their fiscal year. That’s a fancy way of saying before the end of March 2025.
- Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 — or whatever the company ends up naming the successor to the Switch — will be backwards compatible with games from the original Switch.
If you’ve been eyeing some Switch games but were worried the Switch 2 was right around the corner, it’s still a totally reasonable time to buy. Unless Nintendo's own plans change, those games will still work on the next console.
